Alliance Romaine is not alone in opposing the effects of mega-dams on ecosystems and human communities. Worldwide, more than 80 million peasants, herders and indigenous hunter-gatherers have been displaced by large-scale hydro, and many of them are fighting back. In Brazil, the Movimento dos Atingidos por Barragens (Movement of People Affected by Dams), based in Sao Paolo, is active on the legal and public relations front  to defend communities that have been displaced, or are threatened, by hydro-electric projects.
